The law will oblige employers to pay wages on time and give their workers a paid day off per week and three weeks' holiday a year.
There will also be a new mechanism for settling disputes between employers and their employees.
When will Singapore follow suit?
I am sure the Qatari government could have easily used the same excuse to justify Singapore's refusal to act ("oh ... abuse is not a widespread problem"). My take on it is "widespread or not, it's the right thing to do". Otherwise, we're just saying just because we're legally allowed to abuse others just so Singaporeans can take advantage of cheap labor, we would.
