A beautiful video about the "Overview Effect" as described by former astronauts.

I was just reminded of something, when you showed this video. While humans are mostly still looking at this earth, in terms of both moving from one place to another on the same planet, or in other cases, inducing extreme growth and movement INTO a singular site(examples being places like Hong Kong and Singapore and so on), the alternative model is to look OUT of earth to other planets and galaxies. It has been alluded to in Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End", and Charles B. Calhoun's model of 'utopia' by moving outwards to other planets as a part of the natural selection of species.

Sorry, I mean John B. Calhoun. His model of moving outwards into the stars and planets external to Earth is based on an experiment which he did with mice, where he walled them up within a fixed space, with all the necessary resources such as food and water provided abundantly. See this blog which documents this at http://www.mostlyodd.com/death-by-utopia/. I find this especially interesting in the light of the ways in which even scholars including sociologists have linked the population ponzi demography of population overcrowding and growth to the imminent collapse or failure of a society. The natural selection of species apply here. If we locate the video you placed in this context, then it all points to the inevitable need to colonize space if the human race really wants to propagate itself and survive, because Earth's resources do not last indefinitely. Even water and oxygen cannot be taken for granted.

Yah, I think I saw that mouse population experiment a long long time ago. The results were not pretty.

They forgot to include the possibility that mice might cannibalize each other if there is nt enough food. A lot of such artificially manufactured societies are based on the premise that there is enough food and water and resources, but what happens when they run out? "Soylent Green", the movie, has an answer: people feed off human corpses.....

As vast as the earth is it is really just a tiny dust in the universe. Looking from the space gives us some senses of perspective on how very tiny we human being are. But down on earth people are fighting for a job and some would not hesitate to "kill" to achieve their own goals. Many who are in power never seem to have enough. They would do anything to perpetual their position regardless of the faith of their own fellow citizens. Many sad stories ended in the dust without a trace! In the end everyone has to go! Take it easy and enjoy the short spend of your existence here.
